This is certainly the wackiest story of the bunch, with an inebriated Strange meeting both friend and foe in a dark alleyway. Next is a tale written and drawn by Ted McKeever. His art certainly responds better to the lack of color. Brunner's art is a bit more old-fashioned and reminiscent of those classic black-and-white comics. Again, the dialogue is strong, even if the imagination isn't quite there. It comes across as a less cynical version of a story that might appear in Milligan's Hellblazer. Peter Milligan and Frank Brunner tackle a more down-to-Earth story (for Strange, anyway) where the hero attempts to help a middle-aged man deal with the demons of his past. None of the the other stories are as lengthy as Gillen's but all stand out in their own way. Given that this story numbers at exactly 22 pages, I have to wonder if it was originally supposed to appear as a separate, full-color project. That would explain why certain panels are more washed out and obscured than necessary. The story appears to have been rendered in color first and reverse engineered afterward. My one complaint is that the black-and-white format doesn't particularly suit Irving's art. His pencils are as haunting and moody as ever, yet also lighter and more charming at times than I've come to expect from the artist. Irving seems practically born to render Strange's world. Also equally pleasing is Frazer Irving's art. His dialogue is strong, and his imagination stronger. Gillen manages to accomplish a great deal in the span of a single, average-length comic. Ultimately, Strange is forced to ask himself how far he's willing to go to upset the Doktor's new world order, and whether his inaction may not be for the greater good. We have all of the strange trippiness of the Steve Ditko Doc Strange with straight-up horror and a bit of philosophical soul-searching. Gillen packs in a little bit of everything into this tale. In "The Cure", Strange and Clea investigate a psychiatrist who has a rather unorthodox and horrific way of improving humanity. The first, and meatiest of the book, is a tale by Kieron Gillen and Frazer Irving. Doctor Strange is the latest hero to enter the realm of black-and-white, and I think this might be my favorite outing yet.Īs with the past two installments, Mystic Hands offers a collection of short stories by various writers and artists.

First with the Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu Special and then The Indomitable Iron Man #1, Marvel has found great success in paying homage to those old magazine-style books. It's far from rare to see Marvel or DC revive old publishing trends, but one of the recent revivals I've been most happy with lately is the return of the over-sized black-and-white comic.
